The game about money and relationships

The newlywed game premiered in 1966 to give America a chance to revel in how well newlyweds knew each other, because, well, they were newlyweds. The premise was that these couples wouldn’t know each other as well as couples who have more history behind them than in front of them. However, many couples these days are always newlyweds when it comes to money, and that can lead to stressful relationships.

That’s why we’re excited to partner with Capital One and Capital One Café in Denver again for their new cafe Money and relationships Campaign. Capital One Cafes across the country are hosting Workshops on money and relationships because money plays an essential role in the success of relationships. A recent study shows that money plays a role in 59% of divorces. If you are a couple who has had money issues yourself, these workshops will be helpful for you and your partner.

Our money and relationship history

Couples usually come together based on hormones and pheromones, not credit scores and debt-to-income ratios. However, it is credit score and debt-to-income ratio that can end a relationship. We are no different. It wasn’t until a year and a half after we met that we had a serious conversation about our money and learned that we were in an extremely precarious situation.

Even though we both worked in financial services and helped other people with their money, we were two thirty-somethings saddled with $51,000 in credit card debt and living in a rented basement apartment. This put a lot of strain on us and our relationship.

Neither of us were good at managing our money as individuals, we were also bad at managing our money as a partnership. We managed our money in silos, spent our money unconsciously, and made no plans to achieve our individual and collective goals.

Without much help from anyone, we figured out how to change our circumstances. But that took time and wasn’t easy. Luckily, thanks to Capital One, couples no longer have to go it alone.

That’s why we want you to join us on October 4thTh at 5 p.m. at Capital One Café, 1550 Wewatta St, Denver, CO 80202 to have fun and talk money and relationships.
