Facebook was founded in 2004. At first it was called “The Facebook” and was not intended to be a global social network. It was an online directory for college students to help them network. It was created by a group of Harvard College students Mark Zuckeberg, Chris Hughes, Dusting Moskovitz, Andrew McCollum and Eduardo Saverin. Overnight, Facebook received over 1,000 sign-ups and the network soon expanded to other major universities in the United States.
