Find freedom with your own gay blog
Once upon a time we sat on a treadmill – wake up, eat, work, eat, repeat with an occasional dash of fun. The work never stopped, the bills never stopped and the debts grew and grew. . . more and more, month after month.
Does this sound familiar?
That’s why we became gay bloggers – so we can change our lives (and the world).. That’s why you should become a gay blogger too.
We know tons of readers who want the freedom that comes with owning their own business, being their own boss, and using their voice to help others. If that’s you, this guide will walk you through all the steps you should take.
Whether you want to start your own business or excel in your current career, becoming an LGBTQ blogger is a great place to start. But first: What is a blog?
A blog is a personal “weblog”. A long time ago, words like Brangelina once were merged into “blog.” With your gay blog, you, like other gay bloggers, can lend your unique voice to build a following, help others, and steer your life and career in the direction of your gayest dreams.
How do we know you can be successful with your own gay blog? Because we did it.
Here, listen to the three steps we took to achieve our geoliberated life Queer money®:
Why we started our gay blog
Blogging for the queer community has changed our lives. We went from $51,000 in credit card debt to financial independence.
Our blogging journey began when, after becoming debt-free, we realized that we both wanted to be our own bosses with our own businesses and help other queer people get out of debt and live fabulous lives, not fabulously broke.
Now with Debt Free Guys® and that Queer money® podcast, speaking, writing, and brand partnerships, as well as providing free and paid tools and courses to you, our readers, we earn thousands of dollars per month.
Our blogging journey also started because we wanted to spend more time together because we like each other. . . a lot.
We both now work exclusively for ourselves and live and work from anywhere in the world. In fact, we just returned from work and play for 12 weeks in Spain and a week in France. We’re going to Las Vegas for a year now.
But how do you start your own gay and profitable blog without going broke first? Below are the easiest and cheapest ways to start your own gay blog.
If you’re stuck in the 9-to-5 routine, now’s your chance to break free, especially with the huge discount we negotiated for you, which you can only get by clicking on this link here.
You may be asking yourself, “Aren’t there enough blogs?” Will anyone listen to me?” Yes, and here’s why.
Why we need more gay bloggers (like you).
Although blogging is nothing new, gay bloggers and LGBTQ blogs are.
Google “gay blog” and you won’t find much else this list here. We need more queer voices sharing their knowledge and perspectives on every topic, from fashion to fitness to coming out to nuclear physics. There are approximately 16 million LGBTQ people in the United States alone. That’s a lot of readers craving queer content.
As Harvey Milk said: We must speak out to everyone. The more people we reach, the more people will learn that we are as diverse and similar as they are. The more we share our expertise and voice on every topic known to women, the more we show our value by breaking down stereotypes and prejudices.
Your gay blog can be an opportunity for you and the queer community. You can increase your income, become financially independent and expand your reach. The visibility of diversity within the LGBTQ community will increase. You will inspire others and be able to give back in many ways.
Learn how to give smartly to the LGBTQ community here Queer money®:
Because there are so few gay bloggers, the opportunity is ripe for you to quickly become a leading voice on your topic – and that was the case for us.
What if you don’t feel like blogging? your Thing?
How your platform can grow with your blog
Blogging itself opens many doors.
If you want to become a freelance writer for a major technology magazine, use your blog to showcase your skills. Use your gay blog to launch a career as a speaker, advocate for arts and music in schools, or to be a leader in LGBTQ rights. Your blog can help you incorporate the appropriate raise, promotion, or beta testing chapters into a book you may want to write.
It’s our blog that took us from making $0 to writing Forbeswho earns up to $5,000 a month writing for others, which we report in detail at this linkand then took us on the first ever Queer Money Live Tour.
As our platform grew, so did our ability to do more. For example, as a brand partner for a Fortune 500 company, we made $3,000 in one day, appeared in a commercial for another, and spoke at an LGBTQ fundraising event for another.
We no longer take instructions from others to grow their business. We are now paid to grow our own businesses – and increase our freedom and flexibility.
But the first question many people ask themselves is, “What do I blog about?”
Blog about what you love
Let’s set your perspective. Most bloggers have a specialty, their niche. They choose one, maybe two topics in which they want to be or already are experts.
Choosing a specialty is important. To get quality gigs and make a real impact, you can’t be a Renaissance blogger. You may know everything, but it’s too confusing for your followers if you try to be extra.
Find a topic you like. It’s important to find a topic that you like. You’ll be writing, blogging and speaking about it a lot. To gain a following and become known as an expert, you write about it for years. . . and it will take years.
RuPaul wasn’t invented in a day.
If you can talk about neurolinguistic programming long after your husband goes to sleep, then blog about it. If you enjoy researching, reading, testing and cooking healthy meals, be the king or queen of healthy cooking.
Whatever your topic, love it enough to write about it long after your friends and family have stopped reading – because they will.
Ask yourself:
- Why do I want to become a blogger? Do I love something enough to blog about it? Yes!
- What do I like to talk about, read, watch and write about? Do people know me as a professional at anything? Yes!
- Could I write about it regularly, consistently and continuously? Yes!
- Deep down, am I ready to become an entrepreneur and make a living like other gay bloggers? Yes! Yes! And yes!

Decide who you want your gay blog to serve and how it will serve them
The most important part of blogging is responding to the needs of your audience. Your blog should provide them real value and help them with their real needs.
Our personal and professional experiences lie, for example, in the financial sector. Since 47% of Americans can’t afford a $400 emergency, our little gay blog can help half the country.
We settled into the queer community because we are a gay couple who, like many queer people, made a fortune with mistakes on the scale of Liberace. As gay bloggers, we now use our personal and professional experiences with money to help our readers and listeners.
To choose your perspective as yourself:
- Is there anyone I can help with my blog? Hell yes!
- Do you need my help? Phew!
- Do I want to help them? You can bet on it!
- Am I up to the task? Bitch Please!
Niche to be rich
Now that you’ve figured out what you’re passionate enough about to blog regularly and consistently, it’s time to branch out further into the niche, just like we did with the queer community.
What does niche creation mean?
They say that if you talk to everyone, you don’t talk to anyone. Many people and things compete for your readers’ attention. When you get specific and select a segment of the population you want to serve, you find your people and they find you.
Think of Oprah, for example, because she can do no wrong. Despite her extraordinary popularity, who was her target audience for her 25-year-old talk show? It wasn’t just women. They weren’t gay men or straight women. They weren’t even black women.
Oprah’s primary audience was . . . wait for it. . . straight, white, middle American mothers. Not what you thought, right?
Oprah found a segment of the population that was interested in what she had to offer. Yes, it had a black audience. Yes, gay men, including you, watched faithfully – thank holy Mother Nature for the DVRs. But Oprah’s platform served her, and her income came primarily from straight, white, middle-American mothers.
Did Oprah exclusively talk about straight, white, middle-American mothers? No. We don’t just write about LGBTQ money either, but because we’ve built this platform we can occasionally write and talk about something else. . . like men’s biceps and wine.
your order Join our prominent list of gay blogsShould you decide to accept it, it consists of narrowing down your target audience and topic. The more niche, the richer.
Ask yourself:
- Do I have a unique perspective? Mmmmm hmmm!
- Does my unique perspective have an audience? Like Doogie Howser!
- Is the queer community interested in my topic? Yes, sir!
Choose your host and gay blog platform
If you’re starting an LGBTQ blog to publish your posts publicly, your website will need to be hosted somewhere. Since you’re not a multi-million dollar company or Hillary Clinton, you need a reputable host and server to provide you with technical support to keep your queer blog online and accessible.
This is an extremely important step and the only reason we know is because we screwed up. Hard.
Our goal is to save you the money we didn’t save ourselves. Our trip was expensive; It shouldn’t be yours.
We started blogging on Google Blogger. If you’re thinking about it, don’t do it! Blogger seemed innocent and logical (it’s Google). But like Google+, it was a huge waste.
When we outgrew Blogger, we moved to SquareSpace. Since SquareSpace looked like an Apple product, we assumed it performed like an Apple product. It was about as helpful as Siri.

For example for ours Queer money® Podcast, we would love to own QueerMoney.com. But it’s taken and the seller wants $3,400. Won’t happen! So we own Queer.Money.
So, Get your desired domain now for free.
Tips for choosing your ever-important gay blog name
First, choose your blog name. We recommend that you choose your real name (or your stage name if you are a drag queen or other artist) as the name for your blog.
When we first started blogging, blogs used creative names that identified the blogger’s topic or niche. Times change like Madonna’s accent. You and your gay blog are your brands. You and your gay blog will be easier to find if everything has the same name.
Don’t be too creative, too short, or too wordy. You want a blog name and URL that people will understand and remember. Don’t get too attached to the blog names you find just yet, as you’ll need to confirm their availability.
Your blog name should exactly match your URL, no matter what blog name and blog name format you choose. URLs with the .com suffix spread quickly. Other suffixes are available, but it’s in your best interest to get a .com – it’s like the one time you don’t want to go generic.
So for now, search on Google to see if the blog name you suggested is currently in use. Below we’ll see if someone like Queer Money.com is holding it to ransom.
Then, Grab it, buy it and own it by clicking this link here.

7 resources so you don’t have to blog alone
Many people fear working hard alone, late at night and on long weekends when they think about starting their own business. This doesn’t have to be the case and it’s better if it doesn’t.
Over time we have built a support team. We’re not good at everything and we certainly can’t do everything. So we let these others do what they’re good at so we can do what we’re good at.
Below are some supporters to consider if you’re thinking about joining us other gay bloggers.
1. Get social on Facebook
You don’t need to be on every social media channel, but you do want to be on Facebook. Because Facebook can help you reach your target group faster than any other social media platform.
Your main focus will be finding your audience and letting them know that your blog exists. So save yourself the time and effort of figuring everything out yourself. This takes too long and is too strenuous.
Our friend Monica Louie is here to help us and other gay bloggers including you Thrive with Facebook Advertising Education. Like us, she’ll have you up and running with great Facebook ads in no time.
Use Click this link along with the discount code (DFG50) to save $50 on your purchases from Flourish with Facebook advertising.
Listen to our conversation with Monica about Facebook ads Queer money®:
2. Get social on Instagram
Instagram is definitely the social media platform of the day. So, as much as possible, set up your gay blog on Instagram.
Whether you share motivational memes, images, the results of your work, or take photos of your products, there are many ways to use Instagram.
However, there is only one best way to learn this: the Instagram Masterclass from The Mother of Marketing.
Sarah is the person we constantly turn to for helpful Instagram advice. Learn what the pros know and apply it instead of taking forever to learn it yourself.
Join Sarah’s Instagram Masterclass by clicking this link here.
3. Tell your story so people want to hear it
One of the main reasons people don’t start their own blog is because they think no one wants to hear what they have to say.
They do!
The key is to effectively say what is important to you and why. This is how good copywriting helps.
To help us write for our blog, we turn to Liz Theresa. We have been using and recommending Liz for years. Because she helped build our current website, you can proudly find her name at the bottom of every page on our website.
Liz is great at getting into a blogger’s head, figuring out their story, and then helping the blogger tell that story with great writing. Liz also has a great team.
So, Get Liz and her team on your team.
4. Get good at writing blog posts
Writing is a skill, and the best way to get better at writing is to write more. However, you don’t have to do this alone either.
Our good friend Holly teaches people how to write and helps them become freelance writers. Holly earns a hefty six-figure salary per year as a freelance writer for other websites and publications. Her training was extremely successful. So much so that we have hired several of their graduates to join us at Debtfreeguys.com.
Enroll in Holly’s course to learn how to write quickly and well Reach your target group faster.
5. Get technical support you can trust
Every blog needs a technician. Running the backend of WordPress is technical and demanding. A lot can happen in a short time, there are constant updates and there is a lot to know.
None of us are as tech-savvy as we are The smart. That’s why we enlisted the services of our friend and colleague Grayson Bell, founder of iMarkInteractive.
The best thing about hiring Grayson, besides his kindness and intelligence, is that he also started out as a blogger. So he starts blogging and gets bloggers, gay, straight or not.
We still use Grayson today, and we encourage you to hire Grayson today.
6. Give your audience the help they want
Your blog is a business, and businesses need to make an income.
You just can’t give from an empty cup. If you’re worried about putting food on the table and keeping a roof over your head, you’ll be too stressed and distracted to really help your readers. That’s why on flights you are advised to put on your oxygen mask first before helping others.
Trying to do the opposite will do you both a disservice.
However, a great way to make money with your gay blog is through affiliate marketing. With affiliate marketing, you promote the products and services you know, like, and trust to your readers so that your readers can get the same benefit. In return, the brands of the products and services you promote pay you a commission.
We are, for example gigantic Fans of the Honeyfi app. Honeyfi helps couples budget their money together as their relationships develop. We used Honeyfi and like it so much that we promoted it to our readers and students long before Honeyfi had an affiliate program.
Now they have an affiliate program, and we continue to promote it because we know, like, and trust Honeyfi and think it’s a great tool for most of our audiences. It’s just that now we earn a commission for it.
Have you also noticed that almost every person or brand we have recommended in this section is a friend of ours and that we have used or continue to use their services? We know, like and trust these people and their products and services. We have celebrated with each of them several times. So recommending them and their products and services is an authentic and honest sale.
So that’s affiliate marketing, and people are doing pretty well with it. Enter our friend and colleague Michelle Schroeder from Understanding the Cent. Michelle often earns six figures a month.
Six. A month.
Affiliate marketing is an art and a science. Because she is so good at it, Michelle teaches others to repeat her process with her course. Understanding affiliate marketing which you can access by clicking on this link.
Once your website is up and running, you’re blogging and generating traffic, take Michelle’s course. Understanding Marketingand also start making money with affiliate marketing. Just like RuPaul invests in the clothes that make her fabulous and a millionaire, you should also invest in your business. It’s a $197 investment that’s well worth it.
7. Invest in your business
When the time is right, invest in your business. And blogging Is a business.
Sure, you can blog for fun and catharsis, but it will be difficult to maintain and you will have problems with consistency if you have to constantly move from one job and task to the next. Invest in your blog and monetize it so you can make it your main source of income.
