How to generate video scripts with AI

How to generate video scripts with AI

I write for a living. While I Love Because I give my creative work room to breathe, grow, and develop, deadlines don’t allow me the luxury of writer’s block. At some point in the project timeline I need to move beyond this blank page.

It doesn’t happen often, but when I am Really Since I can’t do that, I’m going to bring in AI to help me come up with ideas and get them flowing.

I think when you’re writing something as large as a video script, AI should – at least in theory – help speed up the process when you hit a wall. The real trick, however, is balancing production speed with overall quality. (That’s not always easy!)

Hopefullythe process I’ve outlined for generating video scripts with AI should help you do just that. I’ll go into all of this and more below.

How to write video scripts with AI

Here’s some insider baseball information for you: To learn firsthand how to get AI to write a video script, I first tested a number of tools. In this way I was able to show you everything you need to know to use the technology with complete confidence.

Why do I mention this? Well, the article layout doesn’t reflect this order of events. But I think it’s important for you to know that everything I’ve laid out below is based on my real experience using AI tools in this context.

I hope the lessons I learned along the way save you some time and shorten your own learning curve.

Anyway, enough of the introduction. In the spirit of AI, let’s “dive in.”

1. Be specific about the goals of your video script.

I picked up this little tidbit while experimenting with a number of AI video scriptwriters for this piece (see below!). I noticed that the AI’s output was better when I specified the purpose of the video during the input phase. By “better” I mean more specifically on what I actually needed from the video script.

This step may seem somewhat obvious. However, the tool you choose may not prompt you to enter the purpose of your video at all. And if the tool works based on an open prompt from you, you may forget to specify this Goal of the video. This will have a negative impact on the output.

Having a goal in mind from the start will also help you focus more on what you want to achieve with the video. In turn, the instructions you give the AI tool are better tailored to achieve that end goal. This will save you a lot of time refining your prompts and/or editing AI output.

Example: In my testing scenario, I wanted to create a video sharing the best skincare routine for oily skin. More specifically, I wanted my video script to:

  • Educate young people and adults with oily, acne-prone skin about the best skin care routine.
  • Sell our moisturizer with Zinc PCA to regulate oily skin.

2. Choose your target group(s).

Not only do you want to be specific about the ultimate goal of your video script, but you also want to be specific about your target audience. Just like the purpose of your video, this will shape your thinking and therefore how you instruct the AI.

Generally, when writing a video script, your audience may dictate things like:

  • The length and format of your video.
  • Stage directions, lighting, stage design.
  • The tone of your script.

The suggestions above are just a few elements that your chosen AI video script generator will likely adapt to your target audience. Also, many of these tools (at least in my experience) may not have an input field for your target audience. In this case, you need to be prepared for this in your command prompt.

Example: In my test scenario, I set the target group as young people and adults with oily, acne-prone skin.

3. Set the tone of your video.

I tested five tools; three had a “sound” input option. So, there is a high chance that the AI tool you are using will ask you to enter your preferred sound in a specific input field. If your chosen tool doesn’t prompt you, you can add your preferred sound within your prompt.

Aside from being a preset feature in many AI tools, why is it important to choose the right tone for a video script? Your tone can determine how your reader proceeds feels when viewing your content. Like your reader feels can influence them Actions (e.g. buy, learn more, etc.).

Pro tip: In my experience with AI video scriptwriters, tone options can range from “professional” and “engaging” to “inspirational” and more. If you’re not sure which tone you want to use, try a simple test prompt to see what each tone looks like in practice.

Example: In my test scenario, I chose “empathetic” as the desired tone. In one case, I chose “friendly” because it was the closest available option in that tool.

4. Define all the key points you want to cover.

Only one of the AI tools I tested had its own input field where I could add important points for the video script. This worked well in terms of AI output.

In short, the output reflected that certain points I wanted the video script to be highlighted. Luckily, it was the first tool I tested, so I added these “key points” when prompting the rest of the tools.

Example: In my test scenario I wanted to cover the following key points:

  1. Find the right products for your skin type, including a moisturizer with zinc PCA to regulate oily skin.
  2. Avoid products with ingredients that increase oil production.
  3. Double cleanse to remove dirt and excess oil from the deeper layers of the skin.

5. Design your prompt.

Every AI video script generator is different. Some require you to fill out a simple blank field with your prompt. Others require you to fill out certain input fields. In any case, it is best to write an immediate draft that takes into account:

  • The topic of your video.
  • The goal(s) of your video.
  • Your target group(s).
  • Your preferred tone.
  • All the important points that the video script should cover.

Pro tip: I would recommend being somewhat fluent with your prompt. Since every tool is different, there may not be a specific place to add some of the above information.

For example, I encountered a character limit for a tool so I had to cut out some information. Other tools did not have specific input fields for some of the items described above. However, you will save some time by having a prompt in the funnel when needed.

Additionally, in my experience, it is helpful to have a prompt that covers the above points when working with AI video scripters who start with a blank field. (See image below.) A checklist is also provided for cross-reference when editing, refining or regenerating your script.

Example: In my testing scenario, I used variants of the following prompt:

6. Find the right AI video script writer.

Before you start creating AI scripts with a single tool, I strongly recommend testing what is available on the market first.

You want to get a feel for how easy the tool is to use, what the AI output looks like, and whether it really meets your needs. The good news is that you can initially try most of these tools for free.

Pro tip: Need some tool inspiration? No worries! I’ve tested a number of AI video scriptwriters to give you a head start. Check out what I found in the next section.

Example: I tested five AI video scripters (see below) and each was different in its own way. For example, Synthesia was the only tool that specifically required a lens for the video. This definitely improved the output of the AI video script.

Back then, some tools like Writesonic had a special input option for video duration; others don’t. Some of the tools also gave detailed stage directions. Some just reset the narrative part.

My point? It is very important to test the tools first to find exactly what you need.

7. Enter, review, and refine your instructions.

Once you’ve discussed the above and (hopefully!) found the best AI video script generator for your needs, it’s time to enter your instructions.

As I highlighted above, the input options are different for each tool. Therefore, you will probably need to change your command prompt to suit your chosen tool.

After the tool provides the script output, you should check it again for accuracy. You also want to make sure the script reflects the goals you set, the target audience, and any other specifics you included.

If you want to make changes, you can refine your prompt and try again, edit it manually, or work with the edit/rebuild options provided by the tool.

Example: The following example of video script output is from my test with CoCoClip.AI. If I were to request this again to get a better result, I would ask to add stage directions such as lighting or camera instructions.

I would also cut out the “Shine on!” log out. Since we are targeting people with oily skin, I don’t think this is appropriate.

Best AI Video Script Generators

Now it’s time to put five AI video script writers to the test.

To be fair, I will use the same video concept for each tool. However, the specific inputs may change depending on the layout of each tool.

For this reason I may not be able to use it all of the following information, but the general theme always remains the same.

Here’s what I’m running with:

Let’s get started!

1. Writesonic

Writesonic is an AI content creation platform for marketers, agencies and business organizations.

To get started with Writesonic’s AI video script writer, all you need to do is enter all the important details (e.g. topic, tone, and content length) and click Generateand get your script.

The platform also allows you to edit the content after the fact, which is a huge time saver.

Writesonic's AI video scripter

What I like: I found the Writesonic platform easy to use due to the straightforward layout. I also like that you don’t have to log in to test the tool. This is ideal if you want to get a feel for what’s on the market before committing to a specific platform.

Entering instructions into Writesonic's AI video script generator

That means the AI script generated by Writesonic aborted halfway through. I’m guessing you need to subscribe to get a full script? However, I still think that a short script is enough to get a feel for the tool’s content possibilities.

An example of an AI-generated script from Writesonic

It’s pretty impressive how Writesonic’s AI took key points from the instructions and used them to create a more sophisticated script. I would definitely want to edit and expand this. But the text of the video script itself is a good place to start. I particularly like the addition of stage directions.

2. Ahrefs

Ahrefs is an all-in-one marketing intelligence platform. Marketers use the tool to create data-driven digital strategies. I primarily know Ahrefs as an SEO tool. When I saw that they also offer an AI video script generator, I was curious to try it out.

Ahrefs AI Video Scriptwriter

What I like: Ahref’s AI video script generator was pretty easy to use. But I think if I hadn’t experimented with Writesonic first, I wouldn’t have known where to start.

Since Writesonic had special input fields, I had already thought about the most important points and the target group. Otherwise I would be staring at an open, blank screen. And with my basic impetus skills, that might have been a disaster.

Entering instructions into Ahref's AI video script generator

That said, I actually prefer Ahref’s video script output over Writesonic’s. It is more detailed and the tone of the text fits the purpose of the video better.

It also seems more educational than promotional. But the script still includes a naturally placed CTA directing people to get 20% off Zinc PCA Moisturizer.

A second example of an AI-generated video script from Ahrefs

Note: I prompted Writesonic and Ahrefs a little differently. Here’s how:

  • Topic description by Writesonic = “Skincare routine for oily skin.”
  • Ahrefs Topic Description = “Follow the best skin care routine for oily skin.”

I think the “Follow” in my topic prompt for Ahrefs could have made all the difference because it added further context to the instructions.

3. Synthesis

synthesis is an AI video generator that helps you convert text to video. The tool has various AI avatars and the ability to voice your content in over 140 languages. Synthesia’s target audience includes companies of all sizes that use videos for various purposes.

Synthesias AI video script writer

What I like: Like Writesonic and Ahrefs, Synthesia’s AI video scripting platform was intuitive and therefore very easy to use. This is a big advantage because it takes less time to get used to the tool.

Entering instructions into Synthesia's AI video script writer

I also like that Synthesia had an input option to communicate the goal of the video script. This is a handy input field that helped focus the tone and content of the AI output.

Here is what I wrote in this space: “To educate young people and adults with oily, acne-prone skin on the best routine. Sell our moisturizer with Zinc PCA to regulate oily skin.”

Regarding the actual script, the writing skills for a first draft are given. I like how conversational the text is. I also think this is the most natural product placement of the Zinc PCA Moisturizer to date. This could be: “What is the goal of your script?” The input field makes the difference!

An example of an AI-generated video script from Synthesia

Note: Synthesia doesn’t have an “empathetic” tone, so I chose “friendly”, which was the next best option. This slight change could also be why the product placement was a little more natural.

4. Edworking

Edworking is primarily a project management tool that connects remote teams. In this context, I suspect that the educational AI video script generator would be useful for completing certain tasks.

(A bit like you could create a Loom video and attach it to a relevant Asana task, but you can do that all in one tool.)

Edworking appears to be marketing the AI video scripting aspect of the tool to filmmakers, YouTubers, marketers and content creators. This appears to be different audiences and use cases compared to the tool’s main focus.

Edworkings AI video script writer

What I like: I love how easy it is to get started with Edworking. Nevertheless, I have similar feedback to when testing Ahrefs.

Long story short? If I hadn’t first used other AI script generators that had specific input fields, I don’t think I would get started right away as it would take longer to customize the prompt to be specific enough.

Entering instructions into Edworking's AI video script generator

I will level with you; Since Edworking is primarily a project management tool, I was a bit skeptical about the platform’s AI video capabilities.

Despite my skepticism, the output is much better than I expected. I like the clear and detailed stage directions. Unlike other AI tools, the output for this element is truly verbose and doesn’t just provide the verbal script.

5. CoCoClip.AI

CoCoClip.AI is an AI video editor for YouTube Shorts, TikTok and Instagram Reels. You can also use the platform to generate AI images and create scripts.

CoCoClip.AI is aimed at beginners, intermediate and advanced users creating social media content.

The video script author of CoCoClip.AI

What I like: It’s quick to get started and you don’t have to register to test the tool. However, this is the only AI video script generator I’ve tried with a command prompt character limit. So I had to cut out a few aspects from the prompt, e.g. E.g. the question about a specific duration and a CTA.

Entering instructions into CoCoClip.AI's video script generator

While the steps in the skincare routine aren’t as detailed as other AI editions, the text itself reads well and the tone works.

The tool also includes the key points I provided like mentioning double cleansing and choosing the right product ingredients while avoiding harmful ingredients.

Is an AI Video Scriptwriter Right for You?

Having tested the tools firsthand and created a process based on that experience, I find it hard to imagine a case where an AI video script writer wouldn’t at least save you time.

If you have followed any of my other AI content, you may appreciate the seriousness of this statement. And if not, know that I’m still skeptical about most (but not all!) use cases of the technology.

In this case, I imagine a busy content marketer. Maybe they work for an agency and have many projects going on at the same time. If it were me, I would 100% reach for a tool like this.

I don’t think I would use the output exactly as is. Nevertheless, I would be very happy about a starting point. Overall, I think this is the main advantage of these tools.

So instead of asking if AI video scriptwriters are right for you, ask yourself: Would you rather stare at a blank screen and watch your project’s timeline evaporate in real time?

Or would you rather expand and improve something?
