The twin that has not turned

Yes, you read that properly. There is currently a gap in Google in Google, in which websites removed with manual actions or downgraded from the 10 blue links, but can continue to rank in AI overviews. And in a strange turn that creates a unique opportunity to better understand clicks and click the rate for Aios. This is until Google removes the gap … so moves. 🙂

It is common for location owners to contact me for help with manual actions or if they believe that something is wrong with the manual action used. While I recently analyzed a location with a manual action on the directory level, I noticed that it was still a reasonable amount of traffic from the Serps. And not only that, it was ranking Number one In the search results for many of these queries. Yes, #1. Something was wrong …

The twin that has not turned

The AIO gap for locations with manual actions:
For some reason there is a gap with Google’s AI overviews, in which websites or directories that are affected by a manual action can still rank in Aios (and rank well in them). It makes no sense at all, and several SEOs (enclosed) have publicly shared it.

For example, Lily Ray shared it a few weeks ago and then shaped her tweet with additional information after seeing the gap for myself. And these tweets led to a contribution From Barry Schwartz to search engine roundtable.

So it’s a bit out there.

The twiddler, the not twiddle:
Twiddler are adjustments that Google can implement to increase, reduce or filter rankings. We do not know exactly how manual actions are used in processing rankings, but it is quite possible that a twiddler is involved. If this is the case, Google can apply a filter or use a twiddler, and the website in question can punish for this queries.

The twin that has not turned

And if you are amazed by DeinDexing, when manual actions are used, I have shared beforehand how “DeinDexing” is not really deexing for some manual actions. It is more of the distance tool in GSC (whereby the URLs removed from the SERPS, but are not actually removed from the index). Here is my tweet about it.

Well, if a twiddler is used for these manual actions, then down! The websites rank well for Aios, while they are broken down by the 10-blue left.

And this leads to an astonishing opportunity, and a site owner has asked Google for a long time. We hardly knew that manual actions could deliver pure AIO data. To put it the least, it is ironic.

Aios pursue in the Google Search Console (GSC): Maddening adventure has just made a turn.
Last year I wrote a post on ser via the Crazy adventure of the attempt to follow Aios in Google Search console. Unfortunately, Google does not provide a filter in GSC for AIOS, and there is no specific reporting for AIOs (as we do for discover or Google News). Instead, AIO rankings and data are contained, but mixed in the performance reporting with conventional rankings (10-blue links).

Yes, Google provides data for Aios, but it is mixed with everything else. To mention unnecessarily that the analysis of the data is extremely challenging for Aios. In other words, what effects have the effects of the ranking in AI overviews on clicks and do you click through the rate of the SERPS?

The need for data towards what Google tells us …
Google has explained In the past, people who use AI overviews are more satisfied with their results and they see a higher commitment of younger users if they use Aios. Google also said These links contained in Aios receive more clicks than if the page has been displayed as a conventional SERP. That sounds great, but let’s be honest, we cannot analyze this data, so we have to accept Google’s word for it. The core problem is that nobody had solid AIO performance data.

That is so far. At least At the moment

This is how you follow Aios in the Google search console (only if you have a manual action …)
Note, you should move quickly with what I explain below. Google has not yet taken any measures to remove websites with manual actions from AI overviews, but I am sure that this will happen (and maybe earlier than later).

1. Start the Google search console and access the performance reporting.

2. Isolate the content with the manual action. This could be a directory or a subdomain or maybe even the entire site (although I have not yet tested this with a manual action at the location level).

Randnote for setting up directories as properties in GSC:
This is also the reason why setting up directories as characteristics is a great option. You can choose them Directory And don’t worry that you have to filter the reporting on the target page.

3. Isolate the time frame after the manual action has been applied.
We would like to display data after the manual action has been applied to see the queries that drive traffic ahead, while there is a penalty on the website.

4. Check queries and position.
Does the directory or subdomain still drive Google’s traffic during the time frame after the manual action has been applied? Then check the queries and the average position for them. You may see queries that number one, as I have previously stated, there is a manual action for this area of the website. If so, this is a strong sign that they are classified in AI overviews.

Note that the AIO ranking list is the position of the AIO block (which is in the SERPS #1). Incidentally, this includes all links in the AIO. They all have a position of 1 if they are classified in the AI overview.

5. Check the SERPs on AI overview rankings.
Start Google (both incognito and registered) and check whether an AIO is triggered for the query. Of course, check whether you are classified in the AI overview. If GSC shows the number one ranking list and a manual action is available in the directory or in the subdomain, you will likely be able to enter AI overviews.

6. Back to GSC and cutting and dice the data.
At this point you have isolated a query that only ranks in AI overviews. This means that you have data based on ranking in only Aios for this query. Yes, the gap offers you a rare look at the AIO performance. Do not wait, start digging.

7. Clicks, CTR and position:
First, check the total key figures for the query, since the website only ranks in Aios. The ranking in the 10-blue links does not change the data from now on, since the section has a manual action. These are pure AIO data. Rarely again to see that. In the following screenshot, for example, a number of queries show the page in a AI overview. You can see an average position of 1.2 and a GTR of 4.9%.

The twin that has not turned

And this is compared to an average position of 4.6 and a GTR of 2.7%if the location in the 10-blue links has been classified for this queries.

The twin that has not turned

You can also reduce the date and check the general change in the position and the CTR trend for this query (or the group of queries). In the following you can see the jump in position when the manual action was applied and only Aios remained. Here, too, Aios No. 1 rank because you take the position of the AIO block in the SERPS. And as you can see below, CTR also jumps (at least for this group of queries).

The twin that has not turned

And as I made available before, you can check the CTR for all queries that were classified in Aios (all with a position of one, as I explained). As you can see, the CTR is not super high for them. In any case, you would like to check your own data and queries, but I saw that when digging for the website I analyzed.

The twin that has not turned

If you do not have enough data for a query, you can also use a regular expression in GSC and combine queries that result in AIO ranking lists for a specific target page. You can see this in the screenshots above. For example, use pipe signs via regex to combine a number of queries that result in AIOS to get more data (you can identify changes more easily than just a query without much data). If you use Pipe characters, Google shows you the data for all combined queries. It is not optimal, but you may need that if there is not enough data.

Summary: The ironic advantage of manual actions for AI overview tracking.
Move again quickly to check this if you have a manual action. It is a rare opportunity to look at performance data when ranking in AI overviews. What does the click -Through rate look like, for example? This can be one of the few times (or just a time). A manual action benefits a location owner.
