Selling digital products online is one of the best ways to achieve financial freedom. Digital products do not require inventory, have no expiration date, and you can price them however you want. This flexibility can help both entrepreneurs and creatives build a steady stream of income without a lot of startup capital.
Of course, as an artist, author, developer or entrepreneur, you can join a digital marketplace and sell your products there. However, expect commissions, unexpected fees, and a long list of rules and restrictions.
Luckily, there are better ways to sell digital items online that give you the power to sell what you want on your own platform.
This tutorial will walk you through two easy methods to turn your digital goods into a thriving online business. We’ll walk you through each method step by step so you’ll be better able to create one yourself, without the help of an expert.
Why sell digital products?
Selling digital products is an easy and profitable way to monetize your skills and creativity in today’s digital world. For example, you can quickly sign up on platforms like Etsy, Amazon Kindle, WordPress.Org, and Udemy to sell your product.
After all, such marketplaces already have a steady flow of visitors, secure payment methods and low entry costs.
Despite these advantages, such platforms are highly competitive and you will find products similar to yours with selling prices well below what you are asking. It is also difficult to grow your brand because you rely on the market for your marketing and sales.
As a result, many business owners and artists are quickly realizing that digital marketplaces are slowing their growth.
The solution is to gain independence by creating your own digital sales platform.
As already mentioned, digital products are characterized by low operating and production costs. And since you don’t have to store physical goods or manage shipping, this means more profit for you. You can also sell an unlimited number of digital goods to an unlimited number of customers without worrying about running out of stock.
Most importantly, the potential to earn passive income from selling digital products is hard to ignore. Basically, you create once and sell forever – your products work for you around the clock. And unlike physical products, you can sell to customers worldwide at any time and without geographical boundaries.
Additionally, customers receive their purchases immediately, which increases their trust and satisfaction in your company. You can use the feedback you receive and quickly update your digital products to improve them without having to recall them.
The best part is that you can convert your digital products into different formats so that your users can purchase them in the most convenient way and earn even more sales. For example, you can convert your e-book into audiobooks and sell them both as separate products.
Digital products also allow you to promote your skills and passion and make money from them.
You can use them to market your other businesses by showcasing your digital products. For example, you can create a simple WordPress plugin and offer it for free to provide more value to your users. After that, it will be much easier for you to sell them a premium product since they have already seen what you can do for free.
How to sell digital items in WordPress
There are now many types of digital products that can be sold online. For example, you can sell

Step 1: Install and activate Easy Digital Downloads
First, you need to choose an EDD plan official website. We would like to note that EDD has a free plan that allows you to sell digital products and has basic e-commerce features.
The free version of Easy Digital Downloads is still very powerful as it allows unlimited transactions and products. You can also add a shopping cart and payment gateways such as credit cards, PayPal, Apple Pay and Google Pay.

EDD Offers four pricing plans This will ensure you find one that fits your budget and meets your needs. After purchasing a plan, log in to your EDD account and go to your Account dashboard. Download the plugin zip file to your PC here.

At this point, you should see a new menu option in your WordPress dashboard labeled “Downloads.”

Finally, select “Save Changes” at the bottom of the Settings page. That’s it. You can now install and activate this digital eCommerce plugin.
The next step is to set up your payment methods.
Step 2: Set up the payment gateway
You need to set up your website’s payment method to accept online payments. By default, Easy Digital Downloads supports Stripe and PayPal payments. However, you can add more payment gateways via EDD extensions like Authorize.net PayPal trading.
For this tutorial we will set up “Stripe Payment”.
We recommend you set up Stripe payment gateway as it is easy to set up and has amazing security features. You can also accept both local and international payments, expanding your potential customer base for selling digital assets.
Stripe supports a variety of payment methods including credit cards, debit cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay and more, providing flexibility for your customers.
To set up the payment method, go to Downloads » Settings » Payments, Then select the “Stripes” tab. Next, select the “Connect to Stripe” button.
This will take you to the Stripe and Easy Digital Downloads login page. Enter your Stripe account email address here or create one.
Once you enter your Stripe email address, the associated account will appear on the next page. Choose Connect so that you can start the configuration process.
On the next few pages, follow Stripe’s instructions to connect your account to WordPress. Before you can proceed, you must add both your personal and business information.
You will then be redirected back to the Stripe and Easy Digital Downloads login page. Select “Back to Easy Digital Downloads” and you will be redirected back to your WordPress site.
Check this in your WordPress dashboard Connection status under the Stripe payment details to confirm whether the process was successful. It should be highlighted in green to indicate the connection was successful.
Still on this page, go to Payments » General and use the toggle key to enable Stripe. Remember that you can use the same process to activate any other payment gateway.
Step 3: Customize the payment gateway
Change yours below Default gateway from dropdown to Stripe. Since Stripe accepts other payment options, use the toggle button in the Payment Method Icons section to enable the display icons of the payment gateways you also accept.
You can drag and drop these icons to place priority payment gateways at the top.
Then go to the “Checkout” tab. Payments.
Here use the shift keys to Enforce SSL when checking out. This redirects all customers to a secure checkout page, increasing security. Below that, you can enable “Redirect to Checkout,” which will immediately redirect the user to the checkout page when they add an item to the cart.
Next, go to the “Customer Registration” drop-down menu. Select here if you would like:
- All customers can place orders without an account
- Customers must log in to create an account for purchase
- Automatically register new user accounts
Then decide whether you want to show the registration and login forms to non-logged in users on the checkout page.
You can do that too Enable shopping cart saving and “Geolocation Detection” on this page. Finally, Easy Digital Downloads allows you to add banned emails so that they cannot register on your website, increasing the security of the website.
If you are happy with your payment gateway setting, select Save at the bottom of the page. Now you are ready to receive payments for your digital products.
Next, let’s see how you can set up email so you can communicate with your users.
Step 4: Configure your email receipts
First, let’s customize the purchase receipts your customers receive. You can customize it to thank your user for the purchase or offer post-purchase steps to improve the user experience.
To do this, go to Downloads » Emails to open a page where you can see all emails from Easy Digital Download, e.g. Such as “Receipt of Purchase”, “Refund Issued” and more already set up for you. You can easily activate any of these pre-written emails using the buttons below status.
Additionally, you can also select the “Add New Email” button. It allows you to create custom emails like “Add License Renewal Notification”, “Add Subscription Reminder” and “Add Per Product Email”.
However, in this tutorial we will focus on customizing the pre-written emails and not on creating new emails.
To get started, go to the Settings tab under Emails. First select a here Template from the dropdown list if you have created any. Then select the “Attach File” button to upload your company logo. This makes your email receipts more personal and increases brand awareness.
Next, fill out the “From Name” and “From Email” text boxes so your users know who is sending them the email and they will receive one Answer to Email address to be used in the event of contact. This also increases your company’s credibility by giving your users a quick point of communication.
Now adding is also recommended Admin email recipients so that a copy of the receipt can be sent to your team.
Finally, you can also set up EDD to receive and send emails directly from your WordPress dashboard. Easy Digital Downloads recommends that you set up a mail SMTP service and in particular: WP Mail SMTP.
WP Mail SMTP is the best WordPress mailer plugin. It can improve your email success rate, provides email error alerts, backup connections, email tracking and more. You can start with that free version of WP Mail SMTP to see what it offers.
Check out the latest WP Mail SMTP review here.
Now when you are happy with the customization of your email receipt, click “Save Changes.” Well done! You can now send email receipts after your users make a purchase.
Step 5: Create your first digital product
Once your payment method and receipt emails are set, you can add the digital products you want to sell to your WordPress website. Remember that all digital products are called in Easy Digital Products “Downloads.” This ensures that creating a digital product is very easy and there is no confusion.
To start adding the products, go to Downloads in your WordPress dashboard and select Add new at the top of the page.
On the next page, you will notice that the Easy Digital Downloads builder page looks like the native WordPress page block builder. This ensures that you do not experience a learning curve. In fact, you will use WordPress blocks to create the digital product page.
We’ll show you how.
First, enter the product name in the page builder header. Then, in Download details Under Product Type Options, select Single Product from the drop-down options for this tutorial.
You can also add multiple products to the page if you select “Bundle”. And if your digital product is a service, select “Service.” Then enter the price of the digital product under “Pricing Options”.
Now let’s add more information about the product by selecting the plus sign (+) to open WordPress blocks.
You can also open WordPress blocks on the right side by selecting Plus (+) Icon to open the search bar. From here, you can add additional images, headings, content paragraph blocks, and more to design your product page.
Then go to “Download files”. filename to enter the product name. The file name is the text that customers click to download the file. Then click on the link icon below “File URL” to open your WordPress library.
Here, select the digital file from your library that you want to sell, or drag and drop the item from your computer to upload the product to WordPress. Then select “Add to Download” to add your digital product to your page.
If you want to have multiple digital products on the page, you can select “Add New File” under “Download Files” to create another tab to add the new product.
Below that, you can add “Download Instructions” to ensure your users know exactly what to do.
Now select the option on the right side of your Digital Product Builder page Sentence Download image. This is where you upload the featured image of your product, which will appear on the product page and in your online store.
Then you will find this underneath Download Settings Tab. Set up the file download limit, refund status and refund window here.
Next, go to “Button Options”. You can hide the buy button with a checkbox, which is handy if you are out of stock of the product or no longer want to sell it.
From the Buy Button Behavior drop-down menu, select one of the two options add to cart or Buy now as your call-to-action message.
When you’re done, select Publish and Easy Digital Downloads creates a new page for your digital product. It is now live and ready for sale. To see what the product looks like from the customer’s perspective, click View download, and you will be redirected to the product page.
You’ll also receive a shortcode that you can use to add the product to any existing page or widget-ready area of your website.
On the digital product page you will now see the featured image and all the details of the product. All your customers need to do is select the “Buy” button or the call-to-action button you customized.
After that, your users will be quickly redirected to the checkout page to complete the transaction.
That’s it! You can now sell your digital products with Easy Digital Downloads.
Use WPForms to sell digital products
WPForms is the best drag and drop form builder. It comes with over 1,800 pre-made templates to get you started creating. In addition, this form builder plugin also allows you to add form elements using the drag-and-drop interface, making it convenient for you to design your form.
It also has conditional logic that allows your users to only see certain fields depending on their answers. This is great for selling digital products because it ensures your users don’t feel overwhelmed and only focus on the product they’re interested in.
Forms are also widely used and understood by many Internet users, allowing them to go through the payment process quickly. Additionally, WPForms sends the digital product directly to your user’s email address, ensuring that the product is safe and stored securely.
Check out the latest WPForms review here.
Step 1: Install and activate the WPForms plugin
Like Easy Digital Downloads, WPForms also has a free version that has basic form functionality. However, we recommend the Pro version to access all 1800+ pre-built templates and many premium features. Additionally, you can only access the Content Download Form template that we will use in this tutorial on the Pro plan.
So, first of all, visit the official WPForms website and buy a plan. Then log in to your WPForms account and select that Downloads Tab.
Select here Download WPForms to save the plugin zip file on your PC. Also remember to copy the “License Key”.
Next, you need to install the plugin you just downloaded.
Go to your WordPress dashboard and again follow the same steps you did to install the Easy Digital Downloads plugin above. So go to it Plugins » Add new plugin and install and activate WPForms.
Finally, verify your license key by going to WPForms » Settings. Then, on the General tab, paste the copied license key and click Verify Key.
Congratulations! Your WPForms plugin and its pro features are now ready to use.
Step 2: Set up a WPForms payment gateway
In order to receive payment for your digital products directly on your forms, you need to set up at least one payment gateway. The best and easiest solution for this is to use WPForms payment gateways.
For this tutorial, we’ll set up the Stripe WPForms payment gateway. As with using Easy Digital Downloads, the setup process for Stripe is super easy.
Note that if you want to use conditional logic for payments, which can help reduce transaction costs, you must install the Stripe Pro add-on. This add-on is only available for the Pro plans.
To set up Stripe Pro, go to WPForms » Add-ons in your WordPress dashboard. Here, use the search bar to find the add-on and install and activate it.
But you can also use the native WPForms Stripe connection, which is also available in the free plugin. In this tutorial, we’ll use the Stripe Pro add-on to show you everything you can do with it to sell digital items more effectively.
Once you have activated the Stripe Pro add-on, go to WPForms » Settingsand then select Payments Tab. Select here “Connect to Stripe” to start the integration process.
A login page will appear where you enter your Stripe login details. If you don’t have a Stripe account, you can create one on the same page. Whether you’re creating a new Stripe account or using your existing one, the connection process is very simple.
All you need to do is follow the steps provided by Stripe and WPForms to connect. They provide your personal and business data in a smooth and streamlined process.
You will then be redirected back to your WordPress dashboard and a green checkmark will appear there Connection status to show that the integration was a success.
Great! At this point you are ready to receive payments via Stripe with WPForms.
Step 3: Create and customize your download form
In this step, we’ll create a form from a template that you’ll use to sell your digital products.
To create the form, select WPForms Click “Add New” in your WordPress dashboard to open the template page. Then enter a name for your form and select one of the available templates.
To add digital products to your website with WPForms, this is what we use Content download form template. Since WPForms offers so many form templates, you can use the search bar or filters on the left side of the template page to find the template you want.
After that, you will be redirected to the WPForms drag-and-drop builder, where all the pre-added template fields are already there. However, we need to personalize it to ensure that the process of purchasing digital products by your users is smooth.
So how do you customize the WPForms content download form template?
As mentioned, the content download form template already includes four fields to help you capture important customer information, including name, email address, and company name. The fields are placed on the right side of the screen in the preview window.
You can add more form fields, including the items you want to sell, from the field list on the left.
With WPForms you can now sell multiple digital products on the same form. This allows you to create different formats of the same product, price it differently, and sell them all in the same place.
To do this, drag and drop the Multiple items field under “Payment Fields” in the form builder.
Edit the label, item names, and prices as shown below. You can create different plans in list form so that your users can quickly compare and choose the one they want.
Now with WPForms you can make your products appear as they would on popular eCommerce websites like WooCommerce. You can add the price below the product image using the toggle button found in the “Multiple Items” box. You can also activate product images with another toggle button.
Once images are enabled, new field options will appear. Here, under each digital element, select “Upload Image” and add an image from your WordPress gallery or upload one from your PC.
If you want to reduce clutter on your form by reducing the number of images on it, you can enable “Use icon choices” with a toggle and WPForms will use icons instead of images to illustrate your digital products.
Alternatively, you can use a drop-down list instead of the Multiple Items field. This allows your users to easily purchase multiple digital items from the same form and at the same time. The good thing about WPForms is that you follow the same process you followed to customize the Multiple Items field.
All you have to do is add a Dropdown elementIn the Payment Fields section, click and drag and drop the Payment Fields field into the form on the right. That’s it.
Now that the basics are set up, you can customize the form to your liking to make it unique to your website. However, keep in mind that long forms often have a high abandonment rate. With this in mind, it is important to only add relevant fields to your form.
Step 4: Enable Stripe on your form
Once you’re happy with your form, it’s time to activate your payment options for the form. For this tutorial we will use stripes once again.
First, go to “Fields” and navigate to the “Payment” fields. Drag and drop here Strip credit car Paste the field where you want it to appear on the form. The Stripe field already contains all the necessary payment details that your user needs to provide, so you don’t need to customize it.
Once this is done, go all the way to the left and select the Payments tab to open all the payment options you can add to your form. For this tutorial, we will use Stripe, which is also the recommended payment gateway for WPForms.
Then use a toggle key to enable one-time payments, which will open the allocation options.
Mapping allows you to connect the different WPForms fields to the relevant fields in your Stripe Gateway field.
First add a Payment description suitable for your digital goods. For example, for this tutorial, our payment description is “Payment for digital art”.
Below that, use the drop-down menus under each title to map your form.
- Stripe payment receipt associated with “email”
- Customer email associated with “email”
- Customer name associated with “name”
Check out this article if you want to add recurring payments to your forms.
At this point, you are ready to add your digital products to sell into your form.
Step 5: Add download links for digital products
In this step, we want to set up digital products so that users receive a downloadable link in the email. As mentioned earlier, this is a great system to ensure the security of your digital products.
Additionally, it also increases your email open rate, which in turn can improve your email sender score. This means your newsletters are more likely to end up in users’ priority mailboxes.
First, go to the “Settings” tab in your form builder and select “ Notifications. Select here Add new notification to open a new popup where you enter the name of the notification.
Then select “OK” to be redirected to the email notification creation page.
Next, customize how you want the notification to look. Since the email goes to the buyer, we need to customize the email for users.
First delete “{admin_email}” in the “Send to Email” section, then click Show smart tags. Next, select “Email” from the drop-down menu. This maps the email address that your user uses to sign up for the product in this section.
Next, in the text bar of the “Subject” line, customize the title of the email to resonate with your audience. You can say something like “Your digital download is ready!”
After that, go to By name and add the “Name” smart tag from the drop-down menu. Then add your email address under “From Email”.
However, if you want to avoid delivery conflicts, we recommend downloading WP Mail SMTP; This way you can send your emails directly from WordPress.
Below that, use the Smart Tags for the Repy-To text box to add the Name tag so the email in the message title speaks to the buyer.
Next, scroll down Email message section and enter a message to your customer. To do this, first delete the “{all_fields} ” tag so you can add your custom message and a downloadable link.
Next, open Smart Tags and add the tag nameand it should appear in the message field as {field_id=“1″}. Depending on the placement of the field on the form, the tag number in quotation marks (“1”) can be any number.
Then, in the message box, open your email by addressing the user with a greeting like “Hello.” Then place the “Name” smart tag next to your email opener (e.g. “Hello”). Adding the Name smart tag ensures that the user’s name also appears in the message body.
So your message could be something like this:
Hello {field_id=“1″}
Your digital art is ready to download! Thank you for purchasing our products!
Download your copy here: LinkToTheFile.com
Your customers will now receive this email to download their purchases after they have paid and submitted the form.
But what if you don’t want to send your users an email to get the digital product?
WPForms has a simple solution for this too. It makes it very easy for them to get the download link immediately after paying on your form.
All you have to do is leave Settings » Confirmations.
Then, under Confirmation typeYou have three options. The View Page option takes the user to another page on your website where they can download the content. The “Go to URL” takes you to an external website where you can download the file.
For this tutorial we will select: News.
With this approach, all you need to do is write a short message thanking the user for purchasing the digital product. Then paste the link directly into the message box so they can download the product.
Your digital download product form is ready. There’s only one thing left: go live!
Step 6: Publish your form for digital downloads
To do this, select Embed at the top of the form creation page. A pop-up window will appear with two options: Select Existing Page And Create new page.
For this tutorial we will select “Create a new page”. Once you select this option, in the next popup, enter a name for the form and click Get Started to open the new page’s block editor.
In the block editor of the page on the far right, select the Page tab. Then click “Set Featured Image” under this option to add more visual appeal to your form.
At this point your form is ready to use. All you have to do is click “Publish” and your digital download purchase form will go live.
Congratulations! Your digital downloads are now live and ready for sale.
