Back to school is baaaack!
It’s that time of year when teenagers and discounters show up at malls across America in the annual hunt for back-to-school clothes. Let us be your pocket GBF and help you keep your child from looking like an 80s gym refuser. In the meantime, get your free copy 5 building blocks for a happy gay life Here.
Saving money in the back-to-school era
Parents across the land of Free-to-Shop-and-Save are expected to make a mortgage payment every year to give their children a head-to-toe makeover, because dear Mother Nature knows that you can’t do anything about your offspring can demand that they buy one work. So our goal is to help you get through back to school with a dash of NSE (not that expensive).
1. Don’t even go back to school
Your first option is to avoid racking up any more debt from the other hustlers during the back-to-school hunting extravaganza. If your child is older and hasn’t experienced a summer puberty bout, there’s a good chance that many, if not all, of their clothing will still be fine.
How can we expect such tough love?
Now is the ideal time not shopping. Fashion is a reflection of the economy. What’s in fashion right now? Hipsters. What do hipsters love? Hipsters love not to buy new things, but to repurpose, reuse and recycle old things.
Practice this strategy with your most stylish youth. Jeans with zippers are back like Slim Shady. Minor flooding is trending. Streetwear (e.g. T-shirts, shorts and jeans)? Hot! The lumberjack look is still popular. Who can’t find a checked shirt or flannel shirt in their parents’ or grandparents’ closet? Homemade sleeveless t-shirts and tank tops with wide sleeves are back. Have your student tackle the Fatal Attraction with a pair of scissors on their favorite t-shirt and you win, back to school.
2. Back to school in your closet
Stealing washcloths from Grandpa brings us to our next suggestion. If your child spends a day cleaning out their closet, there’s a good chance they’ll find something they forgot. If they’re anything like Moi, they might even wear clothes with tags.
Get the whole family involved in cleaning the closet and leave the corpses alone. Have all the things they no longer need or use put in a pile for the other family members to steal. Sometimes a shirt or pants that mom or dad can no longer wear because adults have not grown up can be transformed into a youthful look.
Any items left in the pile go to the local thrift store to get a tax exemption or credit, and you’ve just found another way to make quick money and pay off debt. Talk about thrifting for back to school. . . .
3. Pop tags
Okay, maybe you can’t buy Nothing for your child(ren) – double negative intent. For a modest update to your wardrobe, visit your local thrift store. Sincerely, you’ve had really good results at thrift stores in Denver. Like the Phillies, thrifting is more of a miss than a hit, but the occasional win is worth it. One man’s shorts are another man’s pants, he says at 5’7.
4. Shipping
With traditional wages somewhere between clowns and pranksters, commission business has seen a resurgence in recent years. Consignment stores are to thrift stores as Target is to Walmart. These stores tend to be hipper and edgier than thrift stores, as consignment store employees search through the clothes they get each day like they’re on Tinder on a Friday night.
These items are at least used “gently”. You won’t see Sach’s Fifth Avenue prices at these bargain warehouses, but your kid will look cool. Remember that their definition of “cool” is not your definition of “nice.”
5. Less is more
In a world where the super-rich are abandoning top-tier labels, it’s only fashionable to do the same. If your future is a mall, tune out the brand-owned stores. If there is one or more names on a t-shirt, say bye, bye, bye.
It’s hard to avoid well-known brands completely, but don’t be someone’s billboard. Gap and Levi sell jeans just as well as Hugo Boss and Abercrombie & Fitch. T-shirts at Urban Outfitters are just as original and high-quality as American Eagle. By the way, Target has a great selection, especially for girls who are good at combining.
A little-known secret for boys is Forever 21’s men’s department, where you can score button-down shirts for under $20. Download a Groupon and save even more. Speaking of digitizing to save money. . . .
6. Go digital
Like a fading pop star, malls aren’t what they used to be, especially if your student wants to set trends rather than follow them like a fading pop star. The best clothes and offers are available online. Through my constant search for the stylishly affordable, I have three favorite .coms. All have reasonably priced clothing and even better sales. If you are foresighted enough, you can only get cheap deals if you know the designers.
- ASOS – The UK-based independent online fashion shopping mall. With over 60,000 affordable brands, this site should appeal to even the most clothing-conscious boy or girl.
- YesStyle – An Asia-based affordable online shopping marketplace. This site offers great, edgy styles that will make your student stand out from the rest.
- GuyLook – For the ultra-avant-garde boy, we mean super-confident and individualistic. The GL positions itself right in the middle of men’s fashion. Sometimes it wins. Sometimes it loses.
As you can see, with a little planning and flexibility, you can send your child back to school without having to work harder and longer hours. It may be impossible to send young people back to school without spending money, but these ideas will offset your expenses.
