- Drag and drop experience – Does the builder feel smooth? Will the preview update as I add fields? Can I rearrange things without struggling with the interface?

Ideal for: Beginners who want a powerful drag-and-drop builder without the complexity
The first thing to go down WPForms apart is not the drag-and-drop builder itself; It’s what’s waiting for you before you ever move a single square.
There are over 2,100 pre-built templates including order forms, quote request forms, event registration forms, job applications, donation forms, and more.
Whatever a small business owner needs, there’s almost certainly a template for it. And that’s more important than people realize.
Why is WPForms one of the best drag and drop form builders?
Here’s why: Starting with a blank form is intimidating if you’ve never created one before.
When you start with a template, you’re editing something that already works. You exchange placeholder text and don’t know which fields actually belong in a form.
Additionally, the drag and drop builder itself is really fast.
For my website, I included a contact form template and added a “preferred contact method” as a radio button.
Then I set up conditional logic for the payment field number only when someone selects “credit card,” and the whole thing was live in under eight minutes.
This way I don’t immediately scare users away with a payment option when they land on the form.
It’s the kind of experience that makes you want to build another one.

However, if you want to connect to Zapier, which allows connections to over 10,000 other apps, you’ll need the Pro plan.
That’s a jump from the basic plan of $49.50. For small businesses that just need a contact or order form, the Basic plan is completely sufficient. However, if automation is part of your plan, budget for Pro.
The good news is that the native integrations meet most small business needs, so you don’t need to connect WPForms to Zapier.
WPForms is the builder I recommend most often because it strikes the right balance. It’s easy for a newbie to publish their first form in an afternoon.
And it’s powerful enough that the same site owner can add payment processing, multi-page forms, and email list signups if needed.
My experience with WPForms
For this article to show how easy it is to use, I installed WPForms Lite on a fresh WordPress installation and opened the builder.
I selected the “Contact Form” template. Then the product dropdown menu was replaced with a checkbox list of menu items.
Added a “Special Instructions” text area and enabled conditional logic to hide a delivery address field until someone selects “Delivery” instead of “Pickup.”
The whole thing took just over six minutes. The form worked on the first submission test. The email notification arrived within seconds.

2. Impressive shapes ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Best for: Advanced users and developers who need data-driven forms and front-end apps
Most form builders collect data and stop there. Formidable Forms collects data and then does something with it.
Once someone submits a form, you can turn those entries into front-end content.
Additionally, this feature allows you to create a searchable directory, filterable listings page, events calendar, and portfolio grid without any shortcodes or custom theme files.
Why is Formidable Forms one of the best drag and drop form builders?
The feature is called Formidable Views. I’ve used Views and a Formidable form to create employee directories, local business listings, and real estate search sites.
But the reason Formidable Forms is so high on my list is its drag-and-drop builder. Repeater fields allow you to capture multiple records in a single form.
Think about reserving a table for a party where you need to meet each guest’s dietary needs, or an application form where someone lists several previous employers.
Other builders either cannot do this or make it difficult. Formidable Forms makes it feel straightforward.
The advanced calculation builder is the other highlight. You can create quote calculators, cost estimates, and review forms that update totals as users fill out fields.
I used it to create a BMI calculator with height, weight and results and updated the live result on the screen when the user made a selection.
However, the learning curve here is real.
Formidable works differently than WPForms. There are more settings, more terminology, and more places to search. Beginners who just need a simple drag-and-drop form will feel overwhelmed.
My experience with impressive shapes
As mentioned, I created a BMI quote calculator using Formidable’s calculation fields.
Set up a form with drop-down lists for height, weight, and results. Added a calculation field that multiplies the unit price by the quantity and applies a final surcharge.
The live preview updated as I completed it.
Setting up the calculation logic took 25 minutes, longer than a standard form. But the result was something I couldn’t have created using WPForms Basic or Ninja Forms.
That’s the compromise: more performance, more time spent up front.
One thing that tripped me up early on: spam submissions. Formidable does not enable honeypot protection by default.
I received 14 spam submissions within two hours before I reactivated it. Always enable spam protection before publishing a form.

Ideal for: budget-conscious users who want all the features included without plan upgrades
Fluent Forms does something the other builders on this list don’t.
Every paid plan includes all features. The only difference between the plans is how many websites you can use the plugin on.
This means form-driven logic, payment forms, conversation forms, and 60+ integrations are available on the cheapest plan.
Why is Fluent Forms one of the best drag and drop form builders?
If you need advanced features from other drag-and-drop form builders on this list, you’ll need a separate paid add-on. With Fluent Forms, what you see in the features list is what you get from day one.
The drag and drop builder is clean and fast. Form fields snap into place.
The preview updates in real time and the template library, while smaller than WPForms’ 2,100+, covers the most common small business use cases.
There’s also an AI form builder if you want to skip manual field setup entirely.
Most plugins use add-ons to keep the plugin size small. So you only add an add-on when you need a feature. So I wanted to see if Fluent Forms’ approach of including everything would actually impact performance.
The slight performance advantage is real. I ran GTmetrix tests before and after installing Fluent Forms and didn’t see any noticeable difference in page speed on a standard WooCommerce site.
The only point of friction I encountered was forwarding notifications.
Setting up conditional email notifications that allow you to send to Team A when someone selects “service request” or to send to Team B when they select “complaint” was less intuitive than I expected.
The settings are there, but you have to read the docs to get them right the first time.
My experience with Fluent Forms
I created a multi-step lead capture form for a professional services company.
Step one: obtain contact information, step two select service, step three: desired appointment. I then connected it to Mailchimp and set up a conditional forwarding based on the service selected.
The form was online in about 12 minutes. Conditional redirection worked correctly on the first test. Mailchimp sync pushed entries immediately.
Forwarding the notifications required an additional 20 minutes of reading the documentation. Once I understood how the notification conditions worked, everything was fine, but it wasn’t as obvious as the WPForms UI makes it out to be.

Gravity Forms has been around for almost a decade. This is reflected in its longevity. The plugin has one of the largest certified developer ecosystems of any WordPress form builder.
It has more than 100 official, certified and community add-ons that expand the developer’s capabilities.
Why is Gravity Forms one of the best drag and drop form builders?
The drag-and-drop builder itself gives you something most competitors don’t: column control within the builder. You can drag fields next to each other while specifying the column width.
For complex forms like insurance applications, detailed service quotes, and multi-section surveys, this visual precision makes a real difference.
The design grid overlay shows you how fields are aligned before publishing.
The add-on that keeps developers loyal is GravityView.
It works similarly to Formidable Views. It converts form entries into frontend ads. This means you can create searchable directories, member portfolios and event listings.
The difference is that GravityView is a third-party certified add-on with its own dedicated development team. The depth and maturity reflects this.
Here’s the honest downside: Gravity Forms doesn’t have a free version. Otherwise I would have placed it higher on my list. For a small business owner comparing options, this is an immediate obstacle.
Especially when you consider that WPForms, Formidable Forms, Fluent Forms, and Ninja Forms all have generous free tiers.
The user interface also shows its age. Functionally it’s fine and everything works, but the builder interface looks dated compared to WPForms or SureForms.
It doesn’t affect performance, but it does affect the first impression. Developers who care about what’s under the hood won’t notice.
Beginners who judge based on how things look might choose something else.
My experience with gravity forms
Using one of the templates, I created a multi-column application form with personal information on the left and professional history on the right.
Drag and drop the column worked exactly as advertised. I added a resume file upload and conditional logic to get a “Work Visa Required?” display. Question based on nationality.
Finally, I connected it to Slack for team notifications.
Setup took longer than WPForms with the same level of complexity. Not because the builder is difficult to use, but because some features, like conversation forms and the survey add-on, require the Elite plan.
If you need these, plan for this in advance. I also noticed that the PayPal Checkout integration requires additional troubleshooting in a shared hosting environment.

For someone who just wants to try out creating drag-and-drop forms before spending any money, Ninja Forms is a sensible first stop.
Why is Ninja Forms one of the best drag and drop form builders?
The core drag-and-drop experience is clean. Fields snap, the builder is fast, and the form preview is accurate.
Simple form types like contact forms, feedback forms, and simple registration forms work out of the box. There is also no cap on how many forms you create or how many submissions you collect.
That’s really generous for a free plugin.
The challenge comes when you need features that go beyond the basics.
For example, conditional logic, payment processing (Stripe, PayPal), and email marketing integrations (Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign) are paid add-ons.
Each can be purchased separately or bundled into the Elite plan.
Here’s the thing: Once you start purchasing the add-ons you actually need, the cost often exceeds what other drag-and-drop builders on this list charge for an all-inclusive plan.
This model works if you really only need one or two specific features. If you use conditional logic, payments, And If you have email integration, you’re probably better off with a bundled plan elsewhere.
My experience with Ninja Forms
I created a simple contact form using the free plugin. The drag and drop builder went smoothly. The fields stayed where I put them, the preview matched the live form, and the submission email arrived as expected.
My problem: I wanted to add conditional logic to hide a “Company Name” field for individual requests. This is a paid add-on.

Ideal for: Gutenberg users who want AI-powered form creation without a separate builder interface
SureForms does something really different: it doesn’t add a new editor. It creates forms within the WordPress block editor you already use.
In SureForms, drag and drop means dragging Gutenberg blocks. If you already know how to create pages with the block editor, you already know how to create forms with SureForms.
Why is SureForms one of the best drag and drop form builders?
This is more important than it sounds. One of the biggest points of friction with form plugins is learning a whole new interface. SureForms eliminates this friction.
The form blocks behave just like any other WordPress block. You drag them in from the block inserter, configure them in the sidebar, and preview them in the editor.
No separate builder tab to open, no learning curve to climb.
The AI Form Builder goes one step further. Type “Create service request form with name, email address, phone number, service type drop-down list, and desired date” and SureForms will instantly generate the entire form.
For someone setting up five forms on a new website, this represents a significant time savings.

For a small business owner who needs to collect payments through a booking or online order form, SureForms offers more than most competitors for free.
SureForms is still catching up: The template library is smaller than WPForms or Formidable Forms. And since it’s a newer plugin, the third-party tutorial ecosystem is thinner.
If you encounter an unusual configuration issue, you may not find a community forum post that already addresses the issue.
My experience with SureForms
I tested SureForms on a website that already uses the Astra theme and WordPress block page editor.
The experience went remarkably smoothly. Creating the form felt the same as creating a block-based page section.
I added fields by browsing the block inserter, configured them in the right sidebar, and published the form as a page.
I used the AI generator to create a job request form from a single sentence prompt. The result was accurate and usable in less than 30 seconds. I customized two fields and it was ready for testing.
The only caveat I come across: some of the more advanced integrations (beyond Stripe) require the business plan. The free version is really powerful, but as your needs grow you’ll probably need to upgrade.

Sigma Forms is the newest plugin on this list and approaches form creation from a different angle than the others.
Most builders focus on the building experience. Sigma Forms focuses on what happens when someone starts filling out your form and doesn’t finish it.
Why is Sigma Forms one of the best drag and drop form builders?
The abandoned form recovery feature tracks when users abandon the form mid-form, logs what they have already entered, and allows you to follow up.
The built-in analytics dashboard displays submission rates, drop-off points, and form completion rates.
For a marketer running lead generation forms, this type of visibility typically requires a separate analytics tool.
The AI form builder is based on natural language prompts. Enter what you need and Sigma will put together the fields and structure.
The 80+ templates cover common business form types and the 50+ integrations handle most standard email and CRM connections.
The downside, however, is that Sigma Forms is still building credibility. It’s new and there aren’t enough users or reviews to place it higher on this list.
Early feedback from users is positive, but “early feedback” is different from “proven at scale.” If you’re risk-averse with your site’s critical forms, WPForms or Formidable Forms have a longer track record.
However, the 60-day money-back guarantee is the most generous on this list. That’s more than enough time to test it in a real campaign.

My experience with Sigma Forms
I set up a lead capture form for a fictional service company, enabled the analytics dashboard, and ran 30 test submissions, half of which were incomplete.
Drop-off tracking correctly identified the field where most “visitors” dropped off the form. This is really useful data for optimization.
The AI generator was fast. I described a multi-step survey form in one sentence and got an actionable result in about 20 seconds.
The builder interface is clean, but has fewer power user options than Formidable Forms or Gravity Forms.
