Gay travel tips like peanut butter and jelly
Whether it’s the middle of summer or the middle of winter, we have a penchant for escaping. It doesn’t matter if you’re stuck in sweltering traffic or scraping the ice off your car windows – don’t you wish you could click your heels together and ride the rainbow to a sunny beach and a refreshing drink or a hideaway in the mountains? Forget Calgon. Technology, take us with you!
When bath salts just aren’t enough, technology can help. Below are seven tips. Websites and apps (16 in total) that can reduce your travel costs. The best way to step up your gay travels is to be conscious about money so you can make more of it. Who doesn’t prefer it?
1. Use tech-savvy travel alerts
Just like Grindr, Scruff, and Facebook, travel sites have come into play with notifications. Alerts to help you get what you want in deals and savings. Websites like CheapFlightsFreak.com and Jet Setter will keep you up to date with current deals to places and flight prices you’re craving.
Work and don’t rely on the first offer you receive. Do a little research and make sure you fill out the options to get as close as possible to what you want. Let yourself be found instead of searching the internet.
2. Get discount codes
The word “coupon” scares most of you in the same way that the trainer says, “Take a shower!” However, in this case, couponing can also be done in the privacy of your own bedroom.
When you book hotel rooms, airline tickets, or rental cars, there is usually a box on the website to add a discount code near where you provide your credit card information. Instead of wondering how someone gets a code, get one yourself.
Sites like Retail Me Not offer discount codes for everything. Find one for your hotel stay, plane ticket and car rental for your upcoming vacation. Discounts range from a few dollars to 40% off. Retail Me Not also offers vouchers for free meals at hotels, as well as bonus points and miles for hotels and airlines. If the stars align, you may be able to use your existing hotel and flight rewards with the discount code.
3. Swap or stay cheap or free
This is where being part of the global gay community can pay off. Even though this gay travel tip sounds a bit crazy, it pays off for many. Swapping apartments is very trendy when traveling. We all have friends and family across the country and even the world. Of course you like to visit her, but what if you both want to get away? Swap your houses on the same dates and enjoy your stay as a tourist without the tourist costs.
If that seems too weird for you or you don’t have any friends (j/k), sign up for Home Around the World, which is LGBT-only, Home Exchange, or LGHEI, also LGBT-only. These websites make it easier to swap apartments or stay with strangers. They expand your travel destination options and offer the benefits of free accommodation. Additionally, with Home Around the World and LGHEI, you get the peace of mind of living with or in a home where you feel safer.
For Home Around the World, the 1-year fee is approximately $60 and for 2 years it is $75. The website is British and billing is in pounds sterling. Home Exchange charges a fee of $150 per year, which is significantly cheaper than staying in a hotel or vacation rental. LGHEI has an annual fee of $35. LGHEI is designed as a way for travelers to stay with a host for a short period of time, one to three days, at minimal or no cost.
For a truly gay travel tip, there’s Misterbandb. This is not a home exchange site, but it does not easily fit into our other categories. Misterbandb is like Airbnb but with a rainbow twist and potentially great tourist advice from a landlord. Misterbandb has nothing to do with Airbnb.
All of these options are particularly beneficial if you are traveling with other families or in a large group. Pull out your apron and chef’s hat and use the kitchen to prepare brunch, lunch or dinner to cut costs a bit and relax “at home”.
4. Pay in advance
We know there is a must-see/do item on your vacation list. Many locations now sell tickets online or on your phone. After you save upfront, pay upfront and you’ll have a better idea of how much your vacation will really cost.
Another smart, money-conscious move is to leverage Swagbucks local. All you have to do is change your location and you’ll be able to search for nearby options, from restaurants to retail. You will find all sorts of ways to save. Swagbucks gives you cash back in the form of gift cards, which is a great way to save money on travel all year round.
5. Use coupons
There’s that annoying word again, but the fact is that when it comes to travel tips, it’s the real deal.
With proper planning, you can download coupons for groceries, restaurants, and more. Sites like Coupons.com and Entertainment.com Offer more vouchers than you need. Some vouchers are sent to your phone via SMS. This is more convenient than carrying around an envelope full of coupons.
Download the Entertainment.com app and get instant access to coupons, discount codes and more.
As a side note, in a very, very scientific study conducted in a Facebook group of more than 45,000 gay men, over 60% said they didn’t mind if a coupon was used on the first date. If not, then why should you?
6. Get discounts on gift cards
Tech-savvy gay travelers are looking for travel tips to save a few bucks, and this one is super easy. Nobody says you just can Gift Cards.
Log in to Giftcards.com and go to the discounts section. You’ll find cards with discounts ranging from 1% to 17% on everything from Starbucks to American Airlines to retailers you might want to visit before you go on vacation to shop for your snazzy new look.
7. Get everything on your phone
Use the powerful mini computer in your pocket. There are millions of travel apps. Apps like Travel Zoo offer hotel and flight discounts, entertainment and local attractions. Travel Zoo offers discounts in other countries including the UK, Spain, Australia, Canada and more.
As a not-so-obvious gay travel tip; You probably already have apps like Grindr, Scruff, and Hornet. Use them to connect with locals who can give you advice on off-the-beaten-path restaurants, entertainment options and local websites that can steer you away from the often expensive tourist traps.
Finally, most major cities and travel destinations have apps that offer travelers discounts on local events, attractions, and popular hotspots. Download your destination’s app and take advantage of the discounts.
If a vacation is unavoidable, become a tech-savvy gay traveler and use these tips to save money. They are simple and comfortable. Most importantly, they help you get away more without spending more.
