You’ve worked hard to create your product catalog. The last thing you want is for AI tools like ChatGPT or Google Gemini to inaccurately describe your products to potential customers.
AI tools don’t crawl your entire store like a search engine. They quickly grab whatever they can find and fill in the gaps. For a store with a large catalog, that means incomplete responses, outdated information, or worse, sending shoppers to a competitor.
The new llms.txt feature available in Yoast SEO for Shopify closes this gap.
What does it actually do?
A file is created that tells the AI tools which parts of your store are most important: your top products, your collections, your policies, and your most important pages. Think of it like giving the AI a well-organized store guide instead of letting it wander around on its own.
You turn it on once. We’ll do the rest.
Two ways to use it
Let Yoast do it automatically
Turn it on and we’ll create and update the file every week based on your Shopify data. No decisions necessary. The file automatically highlights:
- Your 10 best-selling products over time
- Up to 5 of your largest collections plus a link to your entire product range
- Your store policies, including shipping, returns and privacy
- Your homepage, most recent blog posts, and most recently updated pages
- All pages that you have already marked as cornerstone content
Or choose exactly what is included
If you prefer to have full control, switch to manual selection. You can choose the products and pages you want to feature and there is a dedicated section to add your About Us page so the AI knows the story behind your brand.
In any case, the file is updated weekly and deleted products are automatically removed.
No technical knowledge required
Setting this up from scratch would usually involve some code editing. We’ve integrated it directly into your Yoast SEO for Shopify settings, so any member of your team can activate it in seconds. If you already have a redirect set up for /llms.txt, we will respect that and let you know so it doesn’t break anything.
You decide when it is right for your company
We believe every retailer should have a say in how their content is seen and consumed as AI plays a larger role in how people discover products online. For this reason, this feature is optional.
